The King’s Speech – Christmas 2024

I am not a fan of the British monarchy for reasons I will not go into here, but as a Bible believing Christian I accept that when we are told to honour the king, that is what we must do.

Ever since my childhood, after acquiring one, what was watched on the tele on Christmas Day was a significant part of what we did that day. The Queen’s speech, as it was then, was something that was invariably watched, along with the Morecombe and Wise show and similar, albeit some of us, depending on how they viewed the monarchy, would do so more enthusiastically than others. Love her or not, what the Queen said on those occasions often tapped into the mood of the country and the religious bit (the reason for the season) was normally well presented making quite valid points.

In recent years, the tele has not featured much in how my family spend Christmas day, but this time round we spent the day with friends. One of our gathering was keen to watch the King’s Speech, and that is what we did. I watched loosely with a sense of underwhelming and disappointment, although what King Charles said was on the surface at least ok and loosely followed the pattern set out by his late mother. I didn’t think much more about it until I checked out comments made on social media (to be fair mostly by those discontented types at the way the country was going).

Since speeches like those the UK monarch regularly make at this time is a gauge to how many are thinking at this time, I decided to check out this latest example on You Tube (see here) and while at it came across a critical assessment by a Catholic chap I had never come across before: King Charles Christmas Speech – A Declaration of Civil War” (see here). As one who does a lot of checking out of Internet video content in order to help my understanding of what is really going on in the world and the mood of the people, this came across as being incredibly spot on as to reasons why the King’s Speech was such a disappointment and a lost opportunity given what could and should have been the outcome.

It is best to check this out yourself what this critical assessment amounted to, and while pointing out some positives in the speech he argued that overall the speech was sad, dangerous, threatening and alarming, and was taking the side of the oppressors rather than the oppressed. I will end with my notes (taken while listening to this 26 minute video) on what I saw as the salient points that were made:

  1. The State is lying (reference Southport murder and riots) and what we are beginning to see are the beginnings of a civil war against common people that is likely to escalate
  2. We are seeing political prisoners – imprisoned for venting anger due to be being lied to by the State and its emissaries
  3. Christian content is being suppressed in society – street preachers are being punished for speaking the truth
  4. Any hope that Charles would speak on behalf of common folk and not be as a WEF puppet etc. was proved to be unfounded.
  5. Charles has picked a side – the State, which is against the very people who he should be representing.
  6. His syncrenistic approach to religion (all religions are the same) – misrepresenting Jesus and His call to people to repent
  7. What should be war against evil has changed to one about eco and supporting the diversity of culture and religion agenda
  8. In championing diversity, inclusion and equality he is siding with the new Marxists rather than the exponents of traditional Christianity, who were given short shrift
  9. Back to Southport, Charles is seen siding with Starmer and his totalitarianism and failing to recognise the concerns of ordinary people that have been ignored and worse
  10. The laws are crushing the people and being used to crush the people for minor infringements and thought crimes – many now afraid of being punished for speaking out against what they see
  11. “Listening” is said to be at the centre of the gospel and that message has been twisted – peace and goodwill to all also demand confronting evil and is not what other religions and ideologies teach, contrary to what Charles claims
  12. Downgrading of what is a unique faith (Christianity) and instead misrepresenting what Jesus really taught

Update 29/12/24

One of my friends who read the above took me to task for spreading hate and made the point it was very good speech delivered in the right Christian spirit. I realise there will be others who think the same. My hopefully gentle response was when does speaking the truth amount to hate and isn’t that what is happening with the societal elite obsession with political correctness. I realise the chap I quoted came across more strongly that I might have done in his criticism of the King and his speech, but essentially he raised important concerns that if these are not addressed will not bode well for the country that our king reigns over. Of course I try to honour the king, including praying for him, but as with the Hebrew prophets, when they had run ins with one of the kings of Israel for not doing the right thing, King Charles needs to be told when he errs from his Coronation Oath and invited to repent. I hope he will.
