Returning to the Gulshan Tandoori Restaurant, Southend

It has been a while since we have eaten at the Tandoori Restaurant (see here) although we have eaten there on a number of occasions over thirty years. I have even blogged about our experience six years ago (see here), and today we decided to return. Today, my wife and I, along with my sister and her husband, decided to eat there, combining celebrating my birthday, my sister’s wedding anniversary and Father’s Day with the opportunity to eat out.

I had high expectations of what would be on offer, based on past experiences, and we weren’t disappointed. The location and insider décor were not much to wax lyrical about and it was a help yourself Sunday buffet that we would be eating, but the food was fantastic (as hoped for and expected), the service unobtrusive, pleasant and efficient and the value was excellent. Checking out Tripadvisor (see here) and seeing a good many customers, many I would reckon are regulars, I reckon many would agree with me.

One thing I like about the Gulshan is the range of dishes on offer, which in all our cases meant at least two visits to the buffet – one for starters and one for main. The challenge we all faced was in deciding what to go for and in my case it ended up including dishes I haven’t had before despite seeing myself as being an authority on Indian cuisine, and all this for under £15 per person. I couldn’t fault anything and neither could my table companions. We turned down the customary poppadom offer knowing what was on offer in the standard buffet. But I did go for my traditional Kingfisher. The others had a range of soft drinks. We ended with a selection from ice cream desserts, although if I was to find fault mine was somewhat hard – but that was the only thing that might have lost them marks.

I noted last time we were given a hot towel and chocolate at the end but this time the ladies were presented with a red rose. We spent a pleasant two hours at an excellent restaurant in congenial company and I certainly have the Gulshan down for future visits.
